Dr. Rafe Karen is a psychologist who provides therapy to children, adolescents, adults, couples, and families. He specializes in working with people experiencing depression, anxiety, life transitions, and identity development, as well as difficulty expressing and regulating emotions and relationship difficulties. Dr. Karen is also well versed in issues around sex and gender, as well as working with individuals who identify as LGBTQ+

Dr. Karen focuses first and foremost on the therapeutic connection and relationship, as it can be difficult to open up and be vulnerable if you don’t feel seen and heard by your therapist. He works to build a collaborative environment where you feel safe and supported. For first timers coming to therapy, as well as people who are well versed, therapy can be scary. By taking the time to get to know you as a person rather than just the presenting issues, Dr. Karen works to understand the whole person rather than just the issue that brought them into therapy.

Dr. Karen takes an integrative approach to therapy. A “one size fits all” approach doesn’t work for human beings, so the modality and approach are tailored to you and your needs. His work is based in a combination of psychodynamic therapy, Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT), Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), and Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT). He also has experience with family systems therapy, Parent-Child Interaction Therapy (PCIT), and play therapy.

A native New Yorker, Dr. Karen opted to go to Colorado to earn his PsyD in Clinical Psychology at the University of Denver. During his training, he focused on relationships and what it is like to see and be seen by others.

Dr. Karen’s specialties include, Anxiety and Depression, Life Transitions, Challenges in Dating and Romantic Relationships, Couples Therapy, LGBTQ+ Informed and Affirmative Therapy, Therapy for Teenagers, Therapy for College Students and Family Therapy.
